Vietnam: Lots of Temples and Ho Chi Minh

Writer's picture: Ken and TaraKen and Tara

We visited many different temples throughout Vietnam and they are all different. Some represent Hinduism, some represent Chinese Confusious, others are about gods from the ocean, the Earth and the sun. They tend to worship just about anything that they think can bring them success.

The burial site of Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi is a remarkable monument. The area is adorned with lovely lakes and gardens. There is a humble abode where Ho Chi Minh resided during his rule. The tomb is grand, attracting long queues of visitors daily eager to pay their respects. The sight of thousands of people waiting in line is quite impressive. Once you reach a certain point, leaving the line is not permitted, and you must remain in line until you reach the tomb.

Throughout Vietnam, it was fascinating to watch the thousands of scooters and how people still use the old customs to move food and product around neighborhoods. It was quite entertaining to see some of the crazy things that were being transported on scooters. We also did a quick tour through the Hanoi Hilton. This prison was built by the French many years before the Vietnam war. It was interesting how the Vietnamese use this prison to show how brutal the French were to the Vietnamese. But there is only one or two small rooms that speak of the Vietnam War and mainly it was pictures of American troops being very well taken care of at the prison.
