We have not been to DC for years and we were really looking forward to going back. We started our trip with a lovely train ride from New York’s Penn station directly to DC. We also rode the train from Boston to New York both trips were so relaxing. I wish we had more train travel in California. We rented an Airbnb in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of DC, we liked the neighborhood and it was near a metro stop that we used every day.
I had a very moving moment at the Vietnam memorial. A Vietnam vet was looking for his friend on the wall. He was having a hard time finding it. I helped him find it and he let me help scratch the name on to a piece of paper. I asked if I could take a picture and he said “Sure”. It was overwhelming. He was so appreciative. But at that moment I finally came to understand what it all really meant. I shook his hand and thanked him for his service. A moment I won’t ever forget. (Ken Moore)
We did all the usual sites, all the monuments, the Smithsonian, the Newseum and the Museum of the Bible. It was still a bit hot and humid but it cooled off toward the end of the week which was nice. On our way out of town we went through Arlington National Cemetery and Mount Vernon and then the next day drove to Monticello and spent the day exploring Thomas Jefferson's home and grounds. Next stop North and South Carolina.
