The Jewel of the Greek islands

Santorini

After a 1 hour ferry ride from Naxos, we arrive in spectacular Santorini. This island is full of incredible sites in all directions. The three main towns on the island, Thira, Oia and Akrotiri, are built high on the ridges and cliffs of a volcano. The ocean views in all directions were amazing. The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption, which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep.

Be prepared to spend some extra money throughout the island. It is a huge tourist attraction but at the same time you can relax in a small boutique hotel and feel like you are all alone in your own romantic paradise. The food is a bit more expensive then other islands but it is wonderful. There are many excellent restaurants and the Greek salads are freshly made from daily picked vegetables. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and going up and down lots of steps. Because of the way this cities are built at the top of the islands ridges walking is the best way to get around. We highly recommend taking a day in Oia. There is fun shopping and many places to stop and get a bite to eat. But most of all the incredible views of the ocean in all directions and the beautiful blue dome churches all over the sides of the mountains. It is an extremely unique place that is a must see while in the Greek Isles.
