Mykonos

From Istanbul we flew to Athens and then took another flight to Mykonos. We definitely wanted to go to Greece on this trip and as it turned out we needed to spend at least 14 days in Greece before we would be allowed to enter Italy because Italy had put Turkey on their “bad” list for Covid.

While we were laying over at the Athens airport we were able to give our two large duffel bags from Africa to a service that stored the bags while we were traveling the Greek Islands and then they delivered the bags to our hotel in Athens when we returned. I went completely by online reviews and trust in handing over our bags. But this turned out to be an incredible service that delivered our bags as scheduled at our hotel in Athens two weeks later.

We were finally on our way to Mykonos. I had never been to Greece and it had been many years since Ken had traveled there. Mykonos was the first island that we visited and what a lovely start to our trip in Greece. We stayed at a beautiful hotel that was in easy walking distance to the town. We loved this location because transportation and parking was limited on the island and often at night we would see long lines to get a cab. It was great to walk in and out of town whenever we wanted.

The concierge at our hotel was very helpful and scheduled several outings for us. My favorite adventure was charting a boat to take us out on the water. We spent most of the day sailing to another island to walk around and see some ruins then to a cove where we swam and then had a delicious lunch on the boat before sailing back. There were 3 other couples on the boat and we hit it off with a fun couple from Dallas who we still stay in touch with.

This was one of the positives things of traveling during Covid was that we were able to book things a day or two in advance and still have our pick of things to do. We also did not book any restaurant reservations until we got to Mykonos and the concierge was able to get us into any restaurant we wanted to go to with no trouble.

Some of the other fun things we did on Mykonos was rent a 4 wheeler buggy and go around the island, hang out on the beautiful beaches and enjoy the beach clubs which were only about 30% full. We loved the beautiful blue Greek water and gorgeous sunsets. The love of stray cats carried over from Turkey to Greece there were many cats on the streets but all fed and cared for by the local shop owners.

Mykonos had the best shopping and most active nightlife of all the islands we visited and was a very fun introduction to the Greek Islands. Next stop the island of Naxos!
