Goodbye Pop

Writer's picture: Ken and TaraKen and Tara

As some of you know, I lost my father on Jan 1st. He was a wonderful man and I miss him so much. It's taken me a while but I was finally able to sit down and put together a video tribute to my father. My dad was an easy-going guy, quiet most of the time but always had that killer one liner in the back of the room. He got along with everyone and was a sweet man to be around. He was full of wisdom but at the same time he knew when to sit back and let you learn on your own.

I have a million stories but the most important thing my dad taught me was respect. He was always good to me and trusted me, but when I did go off the rails, I always felt worse when my dad just looked at me with that look of disappointment. I understood what shame was whenever I let my dad down. But those were great lessons and I try to carry those forward whenever I can.

My dad was 92 when he passed. He had some amazing years, and we were so lucky to have him for so long. He was married to my Mom, Myrna Moore, for over 25 years. My dad was in the Marines during the Korean War and played the cornet in the marine band. When he got out of the service he became an engineer. He worked at Ampex and Memorex for many years. He opened a repair shop in the late 70s. Tape Recorder Service (TRS) was a little repair shop for tape decks, cassette players, and CBs. My dad loved to fly. While studying for his pilots license, He was lucky enough to win an airplane at the slot machines in Caesar's Tahoe. That's a story in itself. He flew for many years then sold the plane and began to build, from scratch, another plane. He loved to work with his hands. He was the last one in our family to learn to ski, in his early 50s, but he loved it so much he skied until he was 75.

He was a creator, a fixer, an inventor and so many other things. He never stoped tinkering around the house, always trying to improve the way things were made.

Goodbye to a wonderful man, my dad was very special to me and many others.

What a wonderful tribute to your Dad. I often think about learning to fly and I'd love to hear the "he won a plane at Caesars" story. But I was struck by the fact that his name was Edward Kenneth Moore. What?? Did I understand that correctly? Now there's another Ken Moore in your life!
